Week 4: (January 28-February 2): Wikipedia and HTML basics, part 1

 

By Wednesday of this week, be sure to do the following:

 

 

  • Read and discuss Poe's \"TheHive,\" reproduced with permission on the English 516 Wiki.

 

  • Read, review, and get started on "The Simple Web Site Assignment," which is available only at emuonline.

 

By Saturday of this week, be sure to do the following:

 

  • Continue with "The Simple Web Site Assignment."

 

 

 

Read and discuss \"UseWith Caution: The perils of Wikipedia\" from CNN; Justin Appel's "More 'reliable' Wikipedia soon to launch; Wikipedia co-founder aims to create a more authoritative online encyclopedia," from eSchool News. (Sorry, but I think free registration required); and \"Wikipedia as accurate as Brittanica;\" and possibly other articles on the topic of "Wikipedia and accuracy."

 

View/read/browse and discuss "Wikiality--The controversy rages on Wikipedia," from the Stephen Colbert fan site No Fact Zone.Net; Wikipedia

in popular culture (according to the Wikipedia); Wikipedia timelapse of London bombings and Wikipedia 

timelapse of Virginia Tech shootings (both via YouTube); and possibly other articles on the topic of "Wikipedia and culture."

 

 

Week 5: (February 4-February 9): Wikis in Education and HTML basics, part 2

 

By Wednesday of this week, be sure to do the following:

 

Assigning Wikipedia/Weathering Wikis

 

 

  • Browse through/monkey around with Wikia,ScribbleWiki,PBWiki, and wikispaces. Start the create/play with a wiki assignment and discussion.

 

  • Contine to work on web site assignment.

 

 

Don't forget!! Come to the Marshall Poe and Larry Sanger presentation on Wikipedia, Thursday, February 7, 7 pm, EMU Student Center Ballroom!

I will keep you posted about the details, but try to keep this evening open on your calendar so you can attend the various events.

 

 

Also, stay tuned for information on the Wiki Symposium on Friday, February 8! This will be a great opportunity for all of you to attend a sort of "mini-conference" and to learn a ton more about wikis from a lot of different folks at EMU and beyond.

 

By Saturday of this week, be sure to do the following:

 

Richardson and Wikis in Universities

 

  • Read Chapter 4 of Richardson's Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, "Wikis: Easy Collaboration for All" and particpate in discussion.

 

 

  • The Simple Web Site Assignment is due by February 9 at 5 pm! Besure to email me your link as soon as you are done with your site.
